The Breast Cancer-Fighting Nutrient Your Doctor Ignores
(And Even Warns You Not To Eat)
There is a nutrient your breasts need to help them stay cancer-free for life. But you’ll never hear your doctor tell you to take it. In fact, mainstream medicine pays no attention to this important mineral.

And if they do even think about it, they’ll come right out and tell you to avoid it in its most common form.

As a result, 96% all Americans are deficient in this element. But Japanese women are not...

And the breast cancer rates of Japanese women are 66% lower than that of American women.
That’s an astounding number. In fact, it’s such a huge discrepancy that mainstream doctors stood up and took notice. They were desperate to discover what was protecting women in Japan from this potentially deadly disease.

They quickly declared that soy was the secret weapon.

They were WRONG…

It’s true that women in Japan eat more tofu, tempeh and edamame than Americans do. These are traditional foods in their culture.

But American women also eat a ton of soy. In fact they eat too much soy. Our industrial food supply is loaded with it. We consume soybean oil, soy milk, soy lecithin and soy veggie burgers.

And many women eat soy protein powders and snack bars. So Japanese women really don’t eat more soy than American women.

But there is one nutrient the Japanese eat a lot of that Americans are missing out on. And your doctor probably knows nothing about how this nutrient protects you against breast cancer.

I’m talking about iodine.

The Japanese eat between 3 and 13 mg per day of iodine. Compare that with what the government recommends for Americans. The U.S. Dietary Reference Intake for iodine is only 150 micrograms per day.

In other words, the average Japanese woman takes in about 25 times more iodine than the average American woman.

But there’s more to the iodine-breast cancer connection than simply not eating enough traditional Japanese foods...
Our Heavy-Metal World tRIGGERS Iodine Deficiency
In today’s toxic world, we need even more iodine than our ancestors did. A major reason is the amount of mercury in our environment. This heavy metal has contaminated so much more than our fish. It’s in vaccines, dental fillings, fungicides and even the air we breathe.

Mercury is the most toxic non-radioactive poison on earth. And exposure to even a tiny amount leads to serious health consequences.

Mercury exposure can cause severe damage to your central nervous system. Other effects include tremors, depression, loss of hearing, slurred speech, headaches, fatigue, loss of libido, gastrointestinal disorders, and kidney and lung damage.

But a mercury overload also affects your iodine levels. Let me explain...

Mercury competes with iodine in your cells by binding to iodine-receptors. Before long, mercury pushes iodine completely out of these cells. The result is an iodine deficiency.

Symptoms of iodine deficiency include:
  •  Depression
  •  Memory loss
  •  Weight gain
  •  Sensitivity to cold
  •  Headaches
  •  Fatigue
  •  Infections Muscle weakness
  •  Joint stiffness
  •  Constipation
  •  Brain fog
  •  Thinning hair
But an iodine deficiency can also lead to breast cancer.

Most doctors don’t realize that an iodine deficiency could make such a big difference in your breast cancer risk. But it does.

When Japanese women move to the U.S. and stop eating iodine-rich foods, their breast cancer rates shoot up to American levels.
What Your Doctor Doesn’t Know About Iodine
When I was in medical school, I learned that you need iodine to produce thyroid hormones. Even today that’s pretty much all mainstream doctors know about iodine. They almost never make the breast cancer connection.

In fact, a woman stores more iodine in her breasts than in her thyroid gland. That’s not an accident.

You see, this key element is critical for brain-development in infants. This is nature’s way of making sure a baby gets a good supply of this essential brain mineral through breast milk.

When women don’t have enough iodine in their breasts, they can develop painful nodules and cysts. This is called fibrocystic breast disease (FBD).

The link between painful FBD and iodine is strong. In one study, women with FBD were given iodine and the results were startling… 65% showed improved symptoms.

FBD from low iodine is also extremely dangerous. Your risk of breast cancer goes up significantly the longer you have it. Here’s what happens…
When your iodine levels are low, your ovaries produce more estrogen. When estrogen hits receptors in the breast cells, it stimulates growth – for both healthy and cancerous cells.

In other words, when estrogen levels are high, estrogen is more likely to attach to the receptors in cancerous cells. It makes them multiply.

Low iodine also increases the sensitivity of receptors in breast tissue. Breasts start to take in even more estrogen, which increases the risk of breast cancer even further.

Since the 1970s we’ve know that breast tissue low in iodine is more likely to show pre-cancerous changes. And animal studies show that iodine could reverse those changes.

Later studies show that iodine works at the DNA level. In the lab, researchers applied an iodine solution to breast cancer cells as a form of gene-regulation. That’s the process of switching certain genes on or off. The iodine turned on 29 genes and turned off 14 genes. Those gene changes led to the death of the cancer cells.

There is no question about it: Iodine is critical for breast health.

Low iodine is also linked to thyroid problems, obesity, cognitive impairment, psychiatric disorders, fibromyalgia and a variety of cancers. It can also trigger an irregular heartbeat, osteoporosis and muscle-wasting.

But there’s a good chance you are not getting enough of this essential nutrient…
How to Tap Into The Anti-Cancer Power of Iodine
If you follow the government recommendations you get only 150 mcg per day of iodine. That number was set by the FDA in 1924. It’s the minimum you need for your thyroid to prevent a goiter.

It’s NOT enough to prevent breast cancer.

And many people aren’t even getting the paltry 150 mcg per day anymore…

Since 1970, the government has urged us to put down the salt shaker. Now, I’ve never been a fan of iodized salt – it’s bleached and full of chemicals. There are much better ways to get iodine.

But here’s my point… With all the talk about cutting out salt, most people have cut back on their only source of iodine.

In fact, over the past 45 years, Americans have slashed their iodine levels in half. And that has quadrupled their rates of iodine deficiency.

This has almost certainly contributed to the U.S.’s increased rates of breast cancer.

But even if you do get plenty of iodine, your body may not be able to use it...
How to Boost Your Iodine Levels
Your body can’t make iodine. You have to get it from external sources. And, if possible, it’s always best to get nutrients from food.

I advise my patients to get at least 300 mcg of iodine every day for optimal health. The table below shows the best iodine-rich foods :

But it’s difficult to get enough iodine from our food supply. Most crops today are grown on nutrient-depleted soil that lacks iodine.

The one exception you’ll notice from the chart above is seaweed. In fact, common seaweed is iodine-rich and a powerhouse when it comes to fighting breast-cancer tumors. A Japanese study in 2001 even found it more potent than fluorouracil, the chemotherapy drug used to treat breast cancer.

I recommend wakame, nori, arame, and dulse to boost the iodine levels. Another one of my favorites is kombu, also called kelp. You can buy it in Asian food markets and health food stores.

But be careful. After the Fukushima nuclear accident, you should avoid seaweed from Japan. I recommend kombu harvested in Iceland.

And cooking with kombu is easy. I add a three or four inch dried strip to the pot when cooking soups or stews. You can also add kombu to beans while they cook. It tenderizes the beans and makes them more digestible.

IF YOU'RE LOW IN IODINE

If you have any symptoms of low iodine, I recommend you get tested. But get the right test…

Your doctor will probably order a TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) test. That’s not very accurate for iodine levels. Instead, ask for a 24-hour “urine iodine challenge test.”

For this, you take a large dose of iodine and then collect your urine for 24 hours afterward. If you’re low, your body will hold onto the iodine. If you already have enough, your body will dump the excess in your urine.

If you’re deficient, you can still boost your levels and ward off many of the health dangers of low iodine – including breast cancer.
Supplement for Ideal Dosage
Unless you love seaweed, you’re unlikely to get enough iodine from food to make up for a deficiency. That means you’ll need to take a supplement.

1. Start with 325 micrograms per day and increase it slowly.

2. To treat fibrocystic breast disease or prevent breast cancer, you can gradually go as high as 3,000 to 6,000 micrograms (3 mg to 6 mg) per day.

3. You can also find iodine supplements. But make sure you’re getting the right kind… Breast tissue needs iodine – that’s a molecule that consists of two iodide molecules. The iodide form is what your thyroid uses. But you need both. I recommend Iodoral tablets. They contain 5 mg of iodine, and 7.5 mg of potassium iodide.

4. Lugol solution is a liquid form of the same combination. The typical dose is one (6.25 mg) or two drops per day.
Don’t Take Iodine Without This…
Before you rush out to take iodine, you MUST make sure you also get enough of the trace element, selenium.

This is an essential cofactor in the enzymes used in thyroid and breast tissue. Your body needs it to use iodine. Taking too much iodine without selenium can lead to goiter and other thyroid problems.

If you’re getting your iodine from seaweed – perfect. Seaweed is rich in selenium. But if you’re taking iodine supplements, I recommend taking at least 200 micrograms of selenium every day.

I usually suggest fresh, freeze-dried or aged garlic to my patients. It contains a bioactive form of selenium. Start with one capsule or clove and slowly increase to three capsules or cloves after each meal. Or eat two Brazil nuts every day. Each has around 100 mcg of selenium.
